Since I was introduced to the jembe in 1991, it has been one of my favorite instruments, not only because of its versatile nature, but also because of the music and culture that is part of its long tradition. As I studied with West African teachers and learned more about the music, I saw the world learning with me. The jembe has become one of the most popular hand drums the world over and is now recognized as a valuable member of the percussion family by my fellow musicians, band directors, producers, composers, music teachers, students and recreational drummers.

This book will serve as a general guide for anyone who wishes to explore the many aspects of , the jembe. Teachers may find this information useful in their classrooms, both as study and i performance material. Music students will find this material helpful in a general musical sense, but will be able to transfer some of the techniques described in these pages to other instruments and music as well. Groups of friends or associates may find that working together to create jembe-based ensemble music proves to be a rewarding social experience for both personal expression and as a way to enhance team-working skills. Recreational drummers and drum circle facilitators will also find this information useful in the creation of various ensemble and fundamental rhythmic ideas. Whichever aspects of the jembe first draw the reader to this text, I believe it is the integration of them all into a comprehensive view that will prove to be the catalyst for further exploration.

While my intention in presenting this material is not to represent myself as an authority in West African culture, my years of study and experience as an educator and producer allow me to present a body of knowledge that is clear, balanced and well suited for students of all ages and interests. I have tried my best to present information that is representative of the many aspects of the jembe, while staying somewhat flexible and contemporary in my approach. My position is that of journeyman, someone who has studied with the masters and now is able to offer a doorway for others who seek a path to deeper knowledge. There are many teachers of and resources for West African music and culture. This book serves as a starting point for a journey towards them.

Finally, I would like to congratulate you on taking the step to find out more about this instrument. As we study the past and present knowledge of any subject, we become a resource for others. Perhaps someday you'll find yourself in the position to pass along knowledge to eager students. May you, as I, do so with reverence and gratitude for the teachers and the culture they represent. -Kalani
