Bass Drum Essentials for the Drumset is a unique
book exploring bass drum technique and its usage in
a variety of musical styles. It is designed to develop
the drummer's skill in coordinating the hands and feet
while reinforcing essential aspects of playing such as
Iocking-in with the bass player, providing a strong
ensemble foundation, and working together with the
rest of the rhythm section to create an authentic feel
for whatever style the situation calls for. Additionally,
this book will serve to improve coordinated reading
skills while exploring the most common rhythms and
beats found in styles ranging from jazz and Latin to
country, rock and funk.
Each section is designed as a complete lesson;
materials are combined at the end of each lesson in
a logical and musical solo passage called a
"Combination Study".
All the strengthening exercises, combination studies
and coordination studies throughout the book may be
applied to the use of double bass drums as well. When
used in this context, the exercises may be played with
either the right or left foot. If two bass drums are used
simultaneously, the exercises and studies should be
played using alternating strokes, and the use of the
hi-hat with the left foot will obviously be omitted.
Because a considerable amount of coordination and
strength is needed to become a proficient double
bass drum player, the authors suggest that students
work through this book to completion before moving
on to a text that focuses exclusively on double bass
drum technique.
As with any book focusing on drum technique, the
exercises and musical examples contained herein
merely scratch the surface of rhythmic and musical
possibilities. Students are encouraged to expand their
horizons further by making up (ad-Iibbing) their own
exercises, as such creativity is of utmost importance to
the drumset player.
Included with this book is an audio CD demonstrating
many of the beats and exercises, allowing the student
to hear various rhythms as played while following the
written music. The CD also contains play-along tracks
and tempo tracks, providing a musical framework for
students to input their own ideas. Using a tape
recorder to simultaneously capture the student play-
ing along with the CD track provides an excellent
opportunity for self-evaluation of his or her perform-
ance, and is greatly encouraged. |
